Miami Barber Institute Stands
with Venezuela Through Humanitarian Relief Effort

When disaster strikes, the strength of a community is measured by how it responds.

Following the recent earthquakes in Venezuela, South Florida’s Venezuelan-American community quickly came together to organize a humanitarian relief effort dedicated to providing urgently needed medical supplies to affected communities. Businesses, healthcare professionals, nonprofit organizations, community leaders, and volunteers united around a common purpose: helping those facing the devastating consequences of this natural disaster.

Miami Barber Institute (MBI) was honored to be part of that effort.

As part of the Unidos por Venezuela Humanitarian Coalition, Miami Barber Institute donated 20 boxes containing 20,000 N-95 protective masks to help protect physicians, nurses, emergency responders, rescue personnel, and volunteers working tirelessly on the front lines of recovery efforts.

The donation was delivered to the Unidos por Venezuela Humanitarian Collection Center in Miami, FL, where humanitarian supplies were gathered and prepared for distribution to communities affected by the earthquakes.

A Community United by Compassion

The Unidos por Venezuela Humanitarian Collection Center was established through the collaborative efforts of the Venezuelan-American Chamber of Commerce (VACC), Venezuelan American Freight Forwarders Association (VAFFA USA), Hermandad Venezolana Foundation (HERVEN), Venezuelan American Medical Association (VAMA), and Independent Venezuelan American Citizens (IVAC).

Together, these organizations mobilized businesses, healthcare professionals, nonprofit organizations, community leaders, and volunteers from across South Florida to collect medical supplies supporting emergency medical care, hospital and surgical treatment, patient recovery and rehabilitation, and critical healthcare infrastructure.

The initiative demonstrated the extraordinary impact that can be achieved when a community comes together with compassion, determination, and a shared commitment to helping others.

Why This Matters to Miami Barber Institute

The earthquake has deeply affected South Florida’s Venezuelan-American community, where countless families remain closely connected to loved ones in Venezuela. Throughout the region, Venezuelans have become valued neighbors, coworkers, entrepreneurs, students, educators, and community leaders. For many South Floridians, this disaster is deeply personal because it has impacted someone they know or love.

That reality is reflected every day at Miami Barber Institute.

Supporting the humanitarian coalition reflects MBI’s longstanding commitment to community service and its mission of creating a positive impact beyond the classroom.

“At Miami Barber Institute, we believe education extends beyond the classroom. It is about building a culture of service, compassion, and standing beside the communities that shape and strengthen us. Our campus reflects the diversity of South Florida, and we are proud to have students, graduates, faculty, and staff with deep ties to Venezuela. Supporting this humanitarian effort was a natural expression of our values and our commitment to making a positive difference. Above all, we want the people of Venezuela to know they are not facing this tragedy alone. South Florida stands with them, and so do we.”

— Luis Castillo, President, Miami Barber Institute

More Than a Donation

While the donation itself represents an important contribution, its greatest significance lies in what it symbolizes: a community coming together in support of people facing extraordinary hardship.

For Sergio Wong, Campus Director of Miami Barber Institute, the initiative reflects the values that define both South Florida and the MBI community.

“One of the most inspiring aspects of this initiative has been watching organizations, healthcare professionals, businesses, volunteers, and community leaders unite around a common purpose. It reminds us that compassion has the power to bring people together, even in the most difficult circumstances. Miami Barber Institute is honored to stand alongside so many individuals and organizations committed to making a positive difference.”

Living Our Mission

At Miami Barber Institute, education is about more than developing technical skills. It is about preparing professionals who understand the importance of leadership, compassion, and giving back to their communities.

Every day, MBI strives to create an environment where students not only build successful careers but also develop a sense of responsibility toward the communities they will one day serve. Acts of service, community engagement, and humanitarian outreach are part of the values that define the institution and the professionals it prepares.

The recent relief effort for Venezuela is one example of those values in action. It reflects the generosity of South Florida’s community and the power of collaboration to bring hope to those facing unimaginable challenges.

Miami Barber Institute is grateful to stand alongside the organizations, volunteers, healthcare professionals, and community leaders who made this initiative possible. Together, they demonstrated that compassion knows no borders and that, when communities unite around a common purpose, hope becomes stronger than adversity.
