Celebrating Seven Years of Growth, Opportunity, and Community
at Miami Barber Institute
For seven years, Miami Barber Institute has been built around one belief: a career in barbering can create real opportunity when students have the training, support, and confidence to pursue it.
As we celebrate our seventh anniversary, we are grateful to every student, family member, instructor, staff member, graduate, community partner, and guest who has been part of our journey. Your trust has helped us grow from an idea shared by our President, Luis Castillo, and our Lead Instructor, Tomás Castillo, into a career-focused barber school serving students throughout South Florida.
This milestone gives us a chance to reflect on how far we have come. It also gives us an opportunity to share where we are going next.
Building a Stronger Student Experience
A student’s experience at MBI should extend beyond the classroom. Barber education requires focus, practice, consistency, and support from the people around you.
Over the past year, we have strengthened the team and resources that support our students throughout their educational journey. With a Director of Academic Affairs, dedicated Student Services, a Human Resources Manager, and expanded Financial Aid support, we are continuing to build a more coordinated and student-centered environment.
Students arrive at MBI with different stories. Some are pursuing a first career. Some are making a career change. Some are balancing work, family responsibilities, or military service while preparing for what comes next. Our responsibility is to meet them with clear guidance, strong instruction, and a school community that believes in their potential.
More Instructional Time for Hands-On Learning
Barbering is a profession learned through practice. It takes repetition, attention to detail, and the opportunity to work closely with experienced instructors.
That is why we extended our instructional hours. Our updated schedule gives students more time each week to develop their skills through hands-on training and instructor-guided practice, while helping them complete their required program hours in fewer weeks.
We are also continuing to consolidate our instructional team across our bilingual and hybrid modalities. Whether a student is learning in English or Spanish, in person or through our hybrid option, we want every student to receive consistent standards, practical instruction, and the professional guidance needed to succeed.
At MBI, we are not only teaching technique. We are preparing future professionals to communicate with guests, maintain high sanitation standards, manage their time, and build the trust that keeps people returning to their chair.
Making Barber Education More Accessible
Financial access can make all the difference for a student who is ready to pursue a new future. We are proud to offer five funding pathways for eligible students: Federal Financial Aid, Florida Vocational Rehabilitation, GI Bill® benefits, the MBI Economic Hardship Scholarship, and Florida Prepaid Plans.
The addition of Florida Prepaid Plans is an important step for families who have planned for a student’s education and now have another way to apply those benefits toward a professional path in barbering.
Our Financial Aid Department is available to help prospective students and their families understand their options and take the next step with clarity. We believe that talent, discipline, and ambition should have room to grow.
Serving Veterans and Eligible Individuals
We are proud to welcome veterans and eligible individuals who are ready to begin a new chapter after military service.
The discipline, commitment, and purpose that veterans bring to the classroom are qualities that translate naturally into barbering. Through GI Bill® benefits for eligible students, we help veterans explore a hands-on career path where they can build new skills, serve others, and create a future for themselves and their families.
Growing With Purpose in South Florida
Our next chapter includes a forthcoming instructional site in Cutler Bay. This planned location will allow us to bring MBI’s bilingual, hands-on approach to barber education closer to more prospective students and families in South Florida.
As we grow, we remain committed to the personal attention and educational standards that have shaped MBI from the beginning. Growth only matters when it creates more opportunity for students and allows us to serve our community more effectively.
That commitment is evident in our Free Haircuts Program. Student-barber trainees provide free haircut services under licensed instructor supervision, gaining valuable real-world experience while serving members of the community.
The program is available Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. These extended hours give our students more opportunities to practice within their instructional schedules and give community members more time to receive services.
For us, community outreach is not separate from education. It is part of it. Every service is an opportunity for students to apply their training, develop confidence, and understand the impact a barber can have on someone’s day.
Looking Ahead
Seven years is a meaningful milestone, but it is also a starting point for what comes next.
We will continue investing in our students, strengthening our programs, expanding access to barber education, and creating opportunities for future barbers to build careers they can be proud of. Above all, we will continue to value the trust that students and families place in us every day.
Thank you for being part of Miami Barber Institute’s first seven years. We are proud of what we have built together, and we are excited for the future ahead.
