Heritage Styles:
A Celebration of Culture
at Miami Barber Institute

At Miami Barber Institute, we believe barbering is about more than fades, shaves, and clean lines—it’s about people. Every student who walks through our doors brings a story, traditions, and a culture that define them. This October, we’re opening a special space for those stories with an on-campus event called Heritage Styles—a celebration honoring Hispanic Heritage Month and the incredible diversity of our student community.

On Wednesday, October 2, MBI will transform into a place where culture takes center stage. Our students will come together for a community-style potluck lunch, sharing food, music, and traditions. The idea is simple: bring a dish that represents your country, your family, or even something you just love to cook. For some, it might be grandma’s classic arroz con pollo; for others, pupusas, pastelitos, pan de bono, or tequeños. At the table, we’ll discover flavors from all across Miami and beyond, reflecting the cultural blend that makes this city—and our barber school—unique.

And because barbering is always about style, we’re also inviting students to showcase their roots through clothing. Whether it’s traditional attire, your country’s jersey, or any outfit that represents your heritage, bring it with pride. All students are invited to enjoy the tastes and colors of our Hispanic community while also sharing the best of their own cultural heritage. Plus, there’s a prize for Best Dressed Student: a professional Gamma+ Blow Vac—exactly the kind of tool every future barber in Miami needs in their kit.

For MBI President Luis Castillo, this event directly reflects the school’s mission. “At MBI, our students bring Miami’s culture into the classroom every single day,” he explains. “Heritage Styles is a chance to celebrate those roots and remind ourselves that barbering is more than just technique—it’s about community, creativity, and identity.”

That sense of connection is what sets MBI apart from other barber schools in Miami. Yes, we focus on teaching technical skills and preparing students for Florida’s barber license exam—but we also know the barber’s chair is a place where culture, conversation, and creativity come alive. Events like Heritage Styles remind us that every haircut is part of a larger story, shaped by tradition, personality, and pride.

As Castillo puts it: “Many of our students are the first in their families to take this step toward becoming licensed barbers. Heritage Styles celebrates those journeys, those families, and the traditions that brought them here. We want our students to know that their heritage is not only respected at MBI—it’s celebrated.”

So this October 2, come ready to represent. Bring your favorite dish, wear your heritage with pride, and join your classmates for a day that’s about so much more than barbering. Whether you win Best Dressed or simply enjoy a new plate of food, you’ll leave with a stronger bond to your peers and the barbering community that defines Miami Barber Institute.

Heritage Styles is a tribute to our origins—wherever we come from—and to the paths still ahead. And at MBI, we know that journey is always better when we walk it together.
