Rent a Chair or Work as a Commission Barber?

The barber scene in Miami, FL has been growing steadily. Everywhere you look, there are all manner of barber shops. As you near the end of your barber school training program, or maybe even before, you may find yourself thinking a lot about how you will be compensated. What are the options for a professional Master Barber – should I rent a barber chair or work on commission? This typically comes down to two different types of employment models:

Miami Barber Institute’s Free Haircuts Program is a supervised educational training program provided free of charge as part of the institution’s curriculum. MBI is a school, not a commercial barbershop. No payments, tips, appointments, reservations, waiting lists, or private barber transactions are permitted within school premises. Services are provided on a first come, first served basis by students under instructor supervision. All guests must sign the required release form before receiving services.
