Pursuing Your Florida State Barber License for the First Time
Congratulations on taking your first steps toward becoming a licensed barber in the Sunshine State! Miami Barber Institute is here to guide you through the process and ensure your success. Below, you’ll find key details on obtaining your Florida State Barber License for the first time.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
To become a licensed barber in Florida, you must meet the following requirements:
- Age: You must be at least 16 years old.
- Education: Complete at least 600 hours of training at a Florida barbering school and be determined competent by a school official to sit for the restricted Barber exam. Alternatively, complete at least 900 hours of training at a Florida school and have the school official verify a minimum of 900 barbering hours and the completion date for the Barber exam.

HIV/AIDS COURSE
Complete a board-approved Initial HIV/AIDS course and submit the course completion certificate with your application. The HIV/AIDS course must have been completed within two years before applying and be at least two hours long. Note: The 4-hour course for cosmetology cannot substitute for the 2-hour course for barbers. For more information, please refer to our list of board-approved Initial HIV/AIDS Courses.
FEE
Pay the required Fee as provided in the application. If applying online, you can pay with a credit card or electronic check. If mailing your application, please include a check payable to the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Military veterans, their spouses, and Florida National Guard members may be eligible for a fee waiver, reimbursement, or discount. Please visit the DBPR Military Services page for more information.
APPLICATION PROCESS
To apply for your Florida State Barber License, you’ll need to:
- Schedule the Exam: Visit the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation (DBPR) website to schedule your examination: DBPR License Examination Information.
- Application: Complete the application by clicking the “Online Services” link or the “Printable Application” link at the bottom of the Florida DBPR Barber License Application page.
- Submit Required Documents: Prepare the necessary documents, including your program diploma and any additional documents required by the DBPR.
- Pay Fees: Pay the examination fee to the DBPR as outlined on their website.
