Miami, FL – February 5, 2024 – The Miami Barber Institute (MBI) celebrated its 8th Graduation on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition Ballroom. The ceremony was a mix of tradition and excitement, combining a Commencement Ceremony and a Student Barber Battle. The graduates had the support of their families and friends, who cheered them on as they crossed this critical milestone.

Led by MBI President Mr. Luis Castillo and supported by dedicated faculty members Thomas Castillo, Samantha Polanco, and Lazaro Perez, along with Career Education Advisor Jose Montano and staff members Tatiana Liberti and Sineade (Shay) Leon, the ceremony honored the hard work and dedication of the graduating class. Together, these individuals exemplified MBI’s collective commitment to excellence in education, and students, friends and family recognized their efforts as the graduates embarked on the next chapter of their professional journeys.

The 2024 MBI Graduation Keynote Speaker was Lazaro “Lazarito” Gamon, a prominent figure in Miami’s barbering community and a well-known barber shop business owner. As Lazarito took the stage, the audience grew quiet, eagerly anticipating the wisdom he would impart to the graduating class. He spoke directly to the hearts of the graduates, encouraging them to pursue their dreams with unwavering determination, no matter the challenges they may face. 

Drawing from his own experiences and journey in the industry, Lazarito shared invaluable insights that resonated deeply with the audience. His heartfelt advice included timeless principles such as “God’s Timing is Always Perfect,” reminding the graduates to trust in divine providence as they navigate their paths forward. He also emphasized the importance of genuine connection and service, urging them to “Give your time to the person sitting in your chair,” a poignant reminder of the profound impact they can have on their clients’ lives beyond just a haircut. 

But what captured Lazarito’s passion for his craft was his candid declaration: “I don’t like barbering… I love barbering.” With these simple yet profound words, he encapsulated the depth of his dedication and the boundless joy he finds in his work every day. As he stood before the graduates, Lazarito shared a special moment of significance, revealing that he felt deeply honored to celebrate his birthday alongside them, further underscoring the sense of camaraderie and shared purpose that permeated the event.

The 2024 MBI summer/fall cohort of 50 graduates stood at the threshold of a new chapter in their professional journey as they received their well-deserved accolades. The ceremony also saw the presentation of five prestigious awards recognizing outstanding contributions and achievements within the MBI community:

• Tanaya Brannon was honored with the “Barber of the Year” Award for being the most outstanding barber who started with little to no experience. 
• Roderick Flowers received the 2023 “Graduate of the Year” Award for his remarkable attendance, commitment, academic performance, and positive attitude throughout his tenure.
• Donnette McNair, a veteran, was awarded the “Dedication Award” for her his exemplary dedication and outstanding contributions as a student.
• Andy Torres Abreau was awarded the “Dedication Award” for his exceptional commitment and significant contributions.
• Edward Jaen, a veteran, was celebrated with the “Dedication Award” for his remarkable dedication and substantial contributions.

The day’s highlight was the exciting MBI Student Barber Battle, featuring three thrilling competitions: Best Haircut, Fast Fade, and Freestyle, meticulously judged by a panel of esteemed experts, including members of the MBI faculty and renowned barbers Lazarito, John (Icut Art), Rayz Fadez, Mo Rodriguez (Miami Barber), along with former MBI Graduates Axl Escobar, Jacey De Moya, and Luis Miramontes. 

The participants of the Student Barber Battle truly stole the spotlight, showcasing their exceptional skills and creativity and setting the bar high for craftsmanship in their respective categories. The captivating photos and videos captured during the event speak volumes, encapsulating the excitement and talent on display. Mr. Castillo’s passionate advocacy for education deeply resonated as he emphasized its pivotal role in empowering individuals to excel in their craft and make meaningful contributions to the field. Their tireless commitment to nurturing talent and fostering excellence in their students, along with their exceptional teamwork, drives MBI’s ongoing success, cementing its position as an innovative leader in the industry.

Family and friends joined in the festivities, sharing the joy and pride of witnessing the milestone achievements of the 2024 MBI Class.
